The Challenge We're Addressing

In Ethiopia, 1 in 10 girls misses school every month during her period (UNICEF, 2024). For many, this means falling behind in class, losing confidence, and in some cases, dropping out entirely. Without access to affordable menstrual products, girls are forced to use unsafe alternatives like rags, leaves, or even ash—risking infection and humiliation.

This isn't just a health issue. It's a barrier to education, equality, and dignity.

Our Impact & Progress

In May 2025, with the unwavering support of YetmAyehu Foundation (USA), Cornerstone delivered 300 reusable sanitary pad kits to girls at Ewket Chora School. The results were immediate:

- School attendance increased.
- Girls reported feeling more confident and less isolated.
- Conversations about menstrual health began breaking cultural taboos.

And this is only the beginning. Our goal is to scale this initiative to reach thousands of girls in underserved rural schools—because no girl should have to choose between her education and her period.

Our Strategic Approach

Distributing reusable dignity kits that provide long-term solutions.
Educating students, teachers, and communities on menstrual health.
Partnering with schools and local health workers to create safe spaces for girls.

Our Vision for the Future

We envision an Ethiopia where no girl is left behind because of menstruation. Together, we can end period poverty—one school, one girl at a time.

The Challenge We're Addressing

In Ethiopia, access to life-saving medicines and equipment is often the difference between life and death. Every year, over 14,000 mothers die from preventable causes related to childbirth (WHO, 2024), and 1 in 15 children dies before the age of five—many because hospitals and health centers lack even the most basic medical resources.

The situation worsened during the recent conflict and displacement crisis, where health systems in affected regions were pushed to the brink, and vulnerable populations—especially women, children, the elderly, and the mentally ill—were left with almost no access to care.

At Cornerstone, supported by YetmAyehu Foundation (USA), we are stepping in where the gaps are deepest—delivering essential medicines and equipment that save lives every single day.

Real stories of transformation and hope from our work in the field

1

Abebech Gobena Mothers and Children's Medical Center – Addis Ababa

This hospital serves some of Ethiopia's poorest mothers and children. With one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world (267 deaths per 100,000 live births), Ethiopia's mothers often arrive in labor without access to adequate care. Our donation of critical medicines and equipment has strengthened this hospital's capacity to provide safe deliveries, neonatal care, and life-saving emergency interventions—giving hope to mothers and their newborns when it matters most.

Debre Berhan Hospital – Supporting IDPs Amid Crisis

During Ethiopia's northern conflict, thousands of internally displaced people flooded into Debre Berhan, overwhelming an already strained health system. Women delivered babies on hospital floors. Children lacked antibiotics for treatable infections. Cornerstone, through YetmAyehu Foundation, delivered emergency medical supplies to stabilize care, support frontline health workers, and bring life-saving treatment to those who had lost everything—turning despair into a second chance for survival.

Mekedonia Home for the Elderly & Mentally Ill

Mekedonia shelters hundreds of abandoned elderly and mentally ill individuals—many rescued from the streets with severe untreated conditions. Their needs are immense, and resources are painfully scarce. Cornerstone provided over $20,000 worth of life-saving medicines, ensuring the most vulnerable could access treatment and dignity in their final years. For many, it was the first time in years that they received proper medical attention.

Our Strategic Approach

Delivering essential medicines and equipment where they are needed most.
Partnering with hospitals, shelters, and local health authorities to fill urgent resource gaps.
Supporting communities in crisis and strengthening Ethiopia's fragile healthcare system.

Our Vision for the Future

We believe no one should die because a hospital is missing basic supplies. By continuing to deliver critical medicines and equipment, we are building a healthier, more equitable Ethiopia—one shipment, one hospital, one life at a time.

The Challenge We're Addressing

In Ethiopia, 3 out of 10 children drop out of primary school before completing Grade 5 (UNICEF Ethiopia, 2024). Poverty robs children of even the simplest tools—books, uniforms, and hygiene essentials—while rural schools often lack desks, water, and safe sanitation facilities. For girls, the challenges are even greater, with menstrual stigma forcing many to abandon their education altogether.

Our Impact & Progress

Launched in 2025 with the support of YetmAyehu Foundation (USA), the Hope in a Backpack Project is designed to remove these barriers and give every child a fair chance to learn.

We are preparing to equip underserved rural schools with:
- Educational Supplies – Exercise books, pens, school bags, and uniforms.
- Hygiene Kits – Soap, sanitary pads, and underwear to promote health, dignity, and regular school attendance.
- Infrastructure Support – Desks, blackboards, classroom improvements, and water and sanitation facilities.

Our Strategic Approach

Our Goal
To reach 1,000+ students across 5 underserved rural schools by the end of 2025—restoring hope and creating classrooms where no child is left behind.

Our Vision for the Future

Education is hope. A backpack can be the beginning. Whether you are a donor, partner, or advocate—you can help carry hope into every classroom.

The Challenge We're Addressing

Across Ethiopia, youth homelessness is more than a statistic—it's a crisis of dignity, opportunity, and survival.

- In Addis Ababa, an estimated 50,000 people are street homeless, of whom 42% are under 18—many face daily risks of exploitation, trafficking, and violence.
- A study in southern Ethiopia revealed that 38.2% of street-dwelling youth experience suicidal thoughts, driven by stigma, trauma, and lack of support.
- Many of these youth migrate from rural areas in search of education or work—only to find themselves trapped in poverty and hopelessness.

Our Impact & Progress

Why Now
- With 3.14–3.45 million internally displaced people reported in Ethiopia as of mid-2023, youth remain among the most vulnerable and underserved.
- Without urgent action, homelessness will continue to rob Ethiopia's next generation of education, health, and hope.
- Mental health and trauma among homeless youth remain largely invisible and untreated.

Now is the time to build a solution that does more than provide shelter—it restores futures.

Our Strategic Approach

This self-sustaining community will provide:
- Safe housing and care for homeless and vulnerable youth.
- Education and vocational training to equip them with marketable skills.
- Healthcare and mental health support to heal and restore dignity.
- Social enterprises such as agriculture, livestock, and small businesses that will generate income and help youth become self-reliant.

This is not just a shelter—it's a launchpad for potential. By investing in Ethiopia's youth, we are laying the foundation for a skilled, independent generation capable of breaking cycles of poverty and transforming communities.

Our Vision for the Future

Transform street life into stability. Equip youth with education, healthcare, and self-reliance. Create a self-sustaining model that empowers youth to thrive and reinvest in their communities.

The Challenge We're Addressing

Period poverty, homelessness, and lack of access to healthcare often remain invisible because no one is telling these stories. Without awareness, change stalls.

Our Impact & Progress

Our short documentary, "A Glimpse into Period Poverty in Kambata", filmed in Kacha Bira Woreda, Ashira Primary School, shed light on the reality girls face every month:

- Missing school and exams due to menstruation.
- Suffering in silence because of stigma.
- Lacking access to basic menstrual supplies.

This film is more than documentation — it's a call to action to break the silence, challenge the stigma, and demand sustainable solutions for menstrual health equity in Ethiopia.

Our Strategic Approach

Producing documentaries and campaigns that highlight hidden crises.
Engaging policy-makers to create systemic change.
Mobilizing communities through advocacy and education programs.

Our Vision for the Future

Stories change minds. Minds change policies. Together, we can turn silence into action and advocacy into impact.

The Challenge We're Addressing

In Ethiopia, dental care is often a luxury that vulnerable children cannot access. Poor oral hygiene can lead to pain, infections, missed school days, and low self-esteem. For children living in orphanages, oral health is frequently overlooked despite being essential for their overall well-being, confidence, and ability to thrive.

Many of these children have never received a dental screening, leaving cavities, gum disease, and other oral health issues undetected and untreated. Without access to basic dental care tools like toothbrushes and toothpaste, maintaining healthy teeth becomes nearly impossible.

Our Impact & Progress

On August 29, 2025, with the generous support of the YetmAyehu Foundation (USA), Cornerstone Charity Organization conducted a comprehensive dental screening for over 50 children at Zewditu Meshesha Orphanage. Many of these children had never been screened before, and the check-ups provided critical insights into their oral health status.

To complement the screening, we distributed dental care kits—including toothbrushes and toothpaste—for 100 children, ensuring that every child in the orphanage has the tools to maintain healthy smiles.

The impact was immediate:
- Children received their first-ever dental screening, identifying issues early.
- Every child gained access to essential oral hygiene tools.
- Health education sessions helped children understand the importance of daily dental care.
- Smiles returned to faces that had been living with dental pain and discomfort.

Our Strategic Approach

Conducting dental screenings to identify and address oral health issues early.
Distributing dental care kits with toothbrushes and toothpaste to ensure ongoing care.
Providing health education to foster long-term healthy habits.
Partnering with local orphanages and health workers to reach the most vulnerable children.

Our Vision for the Future

This initiative is more than a one-time donation—it's a step toward fostering long-term health habits and showing every child that their well-being matters. At Cornerstone, we are committed to building healthier, brighter futures, one smile at a time.

We believe that every child deserves not only education and shelter but also the gift of good health and dignity. Together, we can continue to restore dignity and hope—because every child deserves to smile without pain.
